VA Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP) Pharmacy Internship

Name of Organization: Orlando VA Healthcare System

Position Title: VA Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP) Pharmacy Internship

Location of the Position: Orlando, FL

Description:

The Orlando Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (OVAHCS) Pharmacy Service invites highly motivated pharmacy students to apply for our competitive internship. Our program will provide outstanding students the opportunity to experience the clinical, operational, and management aspects of pharmacy at an innovative VA Medical Center. This program will help facilitate the transition from pharmacy student to professional pharmacist.

Our Pharmacy STEP students will be exposed to inpatient, oupatient, clinical, and administrative areas of clinical pharmacy practice. Opportunities for learning include didactic experiences as well as competency-based clinical practice with a qualified pharmacy preceptor. The following clinical areas may be included on a rotation: Inpatient (medical/surgical critical care unit, emergency department, inpatient general medicine), Extended Care (nursing home, intermediate care), Primary Care (pharmacotherapy clinics, women’s health, home based primary care, outpatient pharmacy services), and Specialty Pharmacy (anticoagulation, cardiology, nephrology/ESA, infectious disease, gastroenterology, pulmonology, mental health, neurology, endocrinology, oncology, and pain). Pay is very competitive with other pharmacy internships. Depending on rotation, during the summer months STEP students usually work Monday to Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM. If funding is approved, STEP students are invited to continue interning during the academic year and must complete a minimum of 300 hours, which may include evening or weekend shifts.

We aim to provide the STEP student an in-depth understanding of various roles of pharmacy personnel within the medication use system. Ultimately, the goal of this competitive program is to attract, train, and retain exceptional clinical pharmacists who desire to build their career within the VA healthcare system.
